What began in 2013 as a program for Catholic seminarians has exploded to tens of thousands of men worldwide have begun a 90 Day program of prayer, asceticism, and fraternity.
The program derives its name from the Exodus story of the Bible and applies the same principles of forgoing the various pharaohs men have in their lives and seeking freedom in self control and service to their families, their friends, and their communities.
For the lay, irreligious folk, one very basic explanation of program is a blend of a Bible study meets a self improvement group with a deeper component – fellowship.
The consists of weekly meetings in order to keep one another accountable to the program, share their thoughts and gained knowledge about themselves as well as readings from the book of Exodus. Then they apply the information gained into their lives and help encourage one another to live a full life versus living the life of comfort, or self-absorption they are stuck in.
The reasons men join the group are various, some men seek to stop abusing alcohol, smoking weed, rid a pornography addiction, or just to get a handle on a life they feel is overwhelming them with unending to-do lists.
The most famous (or infamous) part of the program are the daily disciplines, called asceticisms and top among them is the daily cold showers.  A few of the other disciplines consist of Morning Offering, or a morning prayer prior to getting out of bed, forgoing social media, sugary drinks, alcohol, sweets, and unnecessary internet usage and others for a period of 90 days.  The men usually have a rough time in the first couple weeks adapting to a brand new way of life, but soon realize how much time and energy has been wasted on the unnecessary distractions of comfort.
While no one has every had a “perfect” Exodus90, men are convinced that the program did help them develop a deeper spirituality and a deeper sense of community than prior to the program.
Practitioners of the program say the grate thing about Exodsu90 is that it’s not too late to begin the program. They always welcome new members and there are various disciplines throughout the year. While Exodus90 is focused on preparation through Lent and until Easter, the program has a year round cycle.
